Foreign Language

Finnish studying is progressing~ I just realized I had a grammar mistake in the title of my blog, Kesällä 2012 means "In the Summer of 2012" but Kesän 2012 means "Summer of 2012." The best parts about Finnish is that every word is pronounced exactly as spelled, there are no grammatical genders, so the word for "it" can mean he or she as well, and there are no definite or indefinite articles like a, an, and the. It really isn't hard like they say, except for the part that word order hardly matters in Finnish, so it gets confusing :/ Also, there are 130 different forms of every verb, so its crazy to try to learn the verbs. The papers in the picture are all for my verb study.

Next year, since they don't offer Russian through the local colleges, (sad, I know) I think I will do French. I think I might dare to say that French is actually be a more pleasant sounding language than Finnish. Next year should be really interesting, I think. Oh, and good luck on your race Mrs. Laber! I think that is coming up soon? I can't wait for the Moonlight Chase, I'll be out running that one!

  1. I really admire how ambitious both of you are with learning languages. I have not yet started my Russian language lessons. I know it will be a real challenge. I will begin with re-learning the alphabet... second will be learning the alphabet in cursive, which my husband says is challenging because the cursive is so different from the printed text.
    As for my race... WHEEW! It was Saturday morning in Chicago. I felt under-prepared. 2 years ago when I ran it I finished at 1:40, and I really expected to do worse this year ... NOPE! I finished at 1:28! Great way to start the summer off on a fit note. I have never done the moonlight chase... thinking about it this year... still not sure.
    Anyway, keep up the good work with the language!

  2. Thanks! I learned a lot of cursive Russian last year, because I really liked the way it looked. Its interesting that they use cursive so often in Cyrillic-using countries, but here it is almost like a dead writing system.
    Awesome job on the race! You really should run the Moonlight race, it's especially fun since it is in the so no one can see how dead I look coming into the finish :D

  3. I never learned the cursive Cyrillic for Serbian, but then again I barely know English cursive. I can read it in English, but only barely, and I almost never write it in it, so I was so sad when I found out for Serbian I'd have to learn it eventually! I'm procrastinating though. vxv ;;

    That's really great that you did so well! I couldn't imagine running for that long haha, I always get really shaky in the legs after about two miles. Mr. Peeters is running the moonlight chase and it's Pirate themed this year, so it'd definitely be a fun time! He asked if I wanted to help out, and I said maybe, so if you both run, I'll feel twice as obligated to help out!
